Winter romance in the "golden" Tauern high valley
With 32 kilometres of slopes, the Rauris Valley is not one of the overloaded ski centres. Here, a lot of emphasis is placed on sustainability and a family winter full of open spaces and ideas to get you on the trail of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Rauriser Hochalm ski slopes are categorised as a “top ski area” and “one of the most scenic in the entire Alpine region” on the skiresort.de website. This does not mean that it’s many kilometres of slopes with Après ski to the point of no return, but rather that here it’s all about the “family” ski area. Through the acquisition of climate protection certificates, it is also one of the first climate-neutral ski resorts in Austria.
Treading quietly through the winter
A free valley bus takes holidaymakers to Hüttwinkltal and Seidlwinkltal. And the Rauris Valley offers so many possibilities for gentle winter sports that can hardly be found anywhere else. Twice a week, a National Park Ranger takes you on a guided snowshoe hike into the dreamlike winter landscape at the foot of the Hohen Sonnblick.
There are 25 kilometres of groomed cross-country skiing trails in the Rauris Valley. The absolutely snow-guaranteed high-altitude trails in Bucheben can be reached free of charge with the valley bus, twice a week. Rauris is also a real insider’s tip for ski touring in the Hohe Tauern Mountains.
Winter romantics are fully catered for with horse-drawn sleigh rides in Rauris-Wörth and in Hüttwinkltal, and even more so with the twice weekly toboggan run from Kreuzboden on an illuminated track.
